Last week, I received a direct mailer from a local dentist advertising his services. But one thing on his mailer shocked me.
His offering was clear. The mailer was easy to read. But the photo he included of himself was of him smiling—mouth closed.
Not a tooth in sight.
Now, as a dentist, you’d think since teeth are his thing, he’d be showing those pearly whites any chance he could get. After all, that’s his brand, right?
And then I crawled under my table and hid my face behind a pillow, because I remembered those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. And that’s exactly what I was doing. Because as a marketing professional, I’m doing a lousy job marketing myself.
It’s the whole the cobbler’s children have no shoes story. We’re too busy working on everyone else’s needs that we don’t make time to properly use our own trade to benefit ourselves.
Can you relate? (Please tell me you can relate.)
Are you a photographer with no professional photos of your family? A florist with no fresh flowers on your table? A home organizer with a cluttered garage? A chiropractor with a stiff back?
For me, this is a step back into being a bit more present. After all, as a marketing consultant and content writer, I have a lot to say. A lot of knowledge to share.
(Like, don’t forget that people—like children—are watching. And if you aren’t doing a good job for yourself, why in the world would they trust you to do a good job for them?)
So, join me as I pull up a chair to my marketing table and offer up some table talk. You can find it here, on LinkedIn, in my e-newsletter, and on my Instagram. Follow me in one or all, and let’s get reacquainted.
